Unfortunately, periodontal-related problems are often discovered after they have persisted for an extended period of time. Proper oral hygiene, daily dental care and regular dental checkups will minimize the risk of gum disease. Gum disease ranges from mild (gingivitis) to moderate (periodintitis) to the severe (periodontitis).
Some of the warning signs of periodontal disease include:
We take periodontal disease very seriously. At your initial exam you will be screened for periodontal problems, and if necessary, we will develop a treatment plan that fits your needs.
Non-surgical treatments are available at our office and your treatment may include any or all of the following:
You can take over the counter, non-aspirin, pain medication for any discomfort you may have. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water the day of treatment to remove any bacteria that is present. You will also want to avoid eating crunchy, spicy or hot foods like chips, raw carrots, and crispy fried chicken. Rinse with warm salt water if your gums become sore and tender. Brush gently even if your gums are tender to help remove any plaque that has started to reform. Always use a gentle fluoridated tartar control toothpaste.
You don't have to floss or use any home care aids the day of your treatment if there is too much sensitivity. Follow all of your home care instructions exactly as directed. Additionally, keep all scheduled hygiene appointments. These appointments are very important to the success of your treatment.
